Why is my available balance going down?

If you’ve noticed your available balance has dropped – or even gone into negative – and you’re not sure why, don’t panic. There are a few reasons why this can happen.

To see what’s caused the change, head to ‘Funds history’ in the app or platform.

Two common reasons include:

  • Overnight fees on CFD positions
These are small daily charges applied to most trades that are held overnight. The fee depends on the size and direction of your position (buy or sell), and it’s taken from your available funds.
  • Dividend deductions on short positions
If you’re holding a short position on a stock or index and a dividend is paid, for example by the company you are shorting, you’ll need to pay the equivalent amount. That’s because when you short a stock, you’re responsible for covering the dividend. This amount is deducted from your available funds around the dividend payment date.
